This course focuses on developing the skills needed to manage more complex terrain, snowpack problems, and group dynamics with greater confidence and intention. Our AST 2 course is designed for backcountry travelers who already have an AST 1 and are ready to take the next step in their decision-making, terrain use, and leadership in avalanche terrain.

AST 2 consists of an online learning component (~6-8 hours) and three full-days in the field. You’ll begin with an online course to review key concepts and dive deeper into avalanche forecasting, snowpack structure, and trip planning strategies. This online course replaces an indoor classroom day allows for students to work through the material on a self-paced schedule.

The night before our first field day, we’ll connect for a 1-hour Google Meet to review the material, discuss objectives, and plan our upcoming days. We then spend three full days in the mountains applying these skills in real terrain—analyzing the snowpack, managing travel in avalanche terrain, practicing advanced companion rescue scenarios, and working through real-world decision-making as a group.
We have planned one helicopter-assisted field day to maximize our time high in the mountains. If we’re unable to fly due to weather or operational factors, the helicopter fee ($295 per student) will be fully reimbursed to students.

AST 2 is a challenging, hands-on course intended for people who regularly travel in the backcountry and want to sharpen their judgment, improve group management skills, and better understand the “why” behind avalanche problems. Our goal is to create a supportive learning environment where questions, discussion, and shared experience lead to stronger, more confident backcountry travelers.
